Captains’ Blog – Course date 020218
This is the first of what I hope will be a series of blogs throughout the year to keep you abreast of news, views and progress within our club and sphere of golf.
Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who attended my “Drive In” last Sunday 28 January, the weather was glorious and the turnout magnificent so my grateful thanks to you all for your support, I hope you enjoyed the day as much as I did. Thanks must go to Tony our Pro, I attended his seniors range session last week and I’m fairly sure his advice enabled me to hit a decent drive on the day. Congratulations to new Lady Captain Sandie Normanton who also drove off well.
The superb lunch prepared by Angie, Carol and team seemed to go down well, despite the pork pie putting in a very late appearance and the salad going AWOL! I won’t mention this again though girls – well not often!
For those that couldn’t make the drive in, I should mention that my charity this year is Different Strokes, a small organization that provides support for younger stroke survivors. Many of you will know that my wife Karen suffered a major stroke in June 2016 and Different Strokes have provided tremendous support to us both as Karen continues her recovery. I aim to raise a significant amount this year to assist their ongoing work and we got off to a flying start on Sunday. Gerry my vice captain did a cracking job of selling yardage guesses together with Sandie on the day and together with the raffle organized by wife Karen and past captain Bettyne we raised a stupendous £450 to get us off to a flying start, huge thanks for your efforts guys and to all who supported both.
In addition to charity fundraising I also intend to raise money for much needed course draining work. Again this winter we have been blighted by the closure of 3 holes on the “back 9” for weeks on end, so we must focus our energy on eradicating this perennial problem.
Entry lists for my first away day to Coxmoor GC and away weekend to Hertfordshire are up on the captains board and both are almost full so be quick if you want to join me for these. To those who have already put their names down, please pay your deposits to the club office by cash, card, cheque or bank transfer ASAP to secure your place and avoid disappointment. Cyber currencies not accepted due to ongoing volatility!!
My aim throughout the year is to play with as many teams, roll ups and groups as I possibly can and to talk with as many of you as I can to canvas your opinions about what you want from your club, so don’t be shy about getting anything off your chest whenever you see me about.
Thanks for reading, see you all soon.
