Club Captain’s team sneak the Wyder Cup

On Friday 20 September, 24 golfers travelled to Carden Park near Chester for Melton Mowbray Golf Club Captain Gerry Stephens’ away weekend. The venue had two excellent courses, the Nicklaus and the Cheshire, the former one to be played twice. The format for the weekend would be the Wyder Cup (Ryder Cup) with a slight change on the second day from Foursomes to combined a Stableford scores.

The Captain led them out on the first day of the pairs with the outcome 4 wins to 2 for the Vice Captain John Harvey’s team. On the 2nd day the roles were reversed with the Captain’s team winning the combined Stableford matches 4 wins to 2. So it was all to play for on the final day of the singles.

It was certainly a nail-biter as after 10 matches it was all square. The Captain v Vice Captain match finished with a half after the Vice Captain sank a 40 foot putt to grab the half. The final matches came in with both wins going to the Captain for a final score of 13 wins to 11.

There were daily Nearest the Pin prizes and the Captain’s prize of a 12 year old Malt Whiskey went to Mick Wilson for being the most consistent golfer over the whole weekend. The camaraderie and team spirit witnessed all throughout the weekend was outstanding, with everyone thoroughly enjoying the event.
