Competitions Report to April 14th, 2014

The Ladies’ Section have had a busy few weeks having played a Monthly Medal, 9-hole Stableford Hi Low trophy, The Medal Winners final, and an individual Stableford.

The Division One (and also overall) winner of the March Medal was Drina Terzza with a net 77. Bettyne Norton won Division Two with a net 79. The nine-hole qualifier, played as a Stableford on the same day, was won by Sue Bailey with 15 points, and runner up was Isabel Gilland with 11 points on count-back.

The High Low Trophy — played as a Greensome Stableford — encouraged a good field of players to take part. The winning pair were Peggy Newton with Margaret Samways, scoring 33 points — one point ahead of runners up, Yvette Joyce and Cheryl Osborne who returned with 32 points. Leah Radford and Sue Bailey came third with 30 points.
The Medal Winners Rose Bowl was played by ladies who had been overall winners or divisional winners in the 2013 medals. Past Lady Captain Maureen Stapleford won with a net 78, with this year’s Vice Captain Karen Middleton taking the runner up spot with a net 79. Bettyne Norton was third with net 80.

Leah Radford won the Singles Stableford with a terrific 41 points — 9 points clear of the runner up, Sue Bailey, who scored 32 points. In third place was Drina Terzza with 30 points. Leah’s score resulted in a cut of playing handicap from 9 to 7, achieving Leah’s target of having a lower handicap than her Dad!

The Gents’ April 9th Midweek Medal was also an RWS qualifier and was won by Bev Blake with a tremendous net 63, knocking Gavin Baxter’s net 67 into second place, and Tim Buxton net 69 into third spot. Mick Wilson’s level gross 70 was the best gross of the day and won by count-back. There were three twos to share the Twos-Sweep, scored by Jev Goddard, Gavin Baxter, and Brendan Boyce.

The April sun was enjoyed by the men in the 12th April Stableford. 87 players took part with some excellent and closely-fought results returned. The overall winner was David Hirst with 40 points. Division One was won by Gavin Baxter 37 points, runner up Brendan Boyce with 36. Division Two winner Matt Thomson shot 39 points, two ahead of runner up Glenn Price on 37. Glenn’s brother, Mark Price won Division Three with 38 points, and Sam Wright took second place on 37. There were 13 twos on the day, scored by: John Burgess, Pete Poolan, Rob Smith, Gavin Baxter, Mike Catlin, Jon Baxter, Roger Alexander, Vince King, Phil Meade, Daryl Clater, Colin Guthrie, Chris Jones, and Doug Woolley.

The Mixed Team began their 2014 match season with an away fixture at Forest Hill. The team lost by 5 ½ to 2 ½; the winning pairs for Melton were Tom Eadon and Chris Cook winning by 8 and 6, Karen Middleton with Tim Bloomer won 2 and 1. David and Janet Bentley halved their match.
