Well done to Mick Wilson for achieving the Double winning the Race to Woodhall Spa on Saturday and also in August the Club Championship
Mick Wilson crowned a memorable year by adding the Race to Woodhall Spa Trophy to his earlier victory in the Club Championship. Just getting to the final proves consistency as the top 30 in the Order of Merit which is based on 25 competitions throughout the season, had a ‘shootout’ over 18 holes 2 weeks ago to see which 5 would join the Order of Merit winner, Brendan Boyce, in the final at the world famous Hotchkin Course at the home of England Golf in Woodhall Spa. Brendan was joined by last year’s winner David Poolan, Steve Goddard, Neil Farish, Mick Wilson & Neil Eaves. The 6 finalists are pictured with their caddies alongside the Hotchkin Starting Clock on the first tee.The final was played as a Stableford Competition but scoring proved difficult with the very high winds.
Wilson got off to a very poor start with just 1 point in the first 2 holes and after 6 holes Boyce and Goddard shared the early lead with 10 points each followed closely by Wilson and Farish on 9 points. At the half way stage Wilson and Farish had edged ahead with 15 points apiece followed by Goddard and Boyce on 13 each. After 11 holes it was a 3 way tie for the lead as Goddard joined the leaders following a birdie. The wind increased even more on the very tight finishing holes which suited Wilson and by the 15th he had a 2 point lead over Boyce with Goddard and Farish a further point back.
Wilson hung on in the gale force winds to crown a great year by winning the final on 31 points with Goddard second on 28 points followed by Boyce on 27 points
Well done to all who played
SIX DECIDED FOR WOODHALL SPA
Our Club’s annual Race to Woodhall Spa competition came to a climax on Sunday. Brendan Boyce, who had already claimed one of the places by coming top of the year’s Order of Merit, teed off first, and he was joined by another 29 members , vying for the other 5 places available. The weather was damp and breezy, not ideal conditions for good golf, but despite this some good scores were achieved.
At half way the lead was held by Kevin Robertson who was 3 under his net par, with 4 others 1 under their pars and 5 level par. As the round progressed the wind strengthened and good scoring was harder.
After 18 holes the winner was David Poolan, last year’s victor at Woodhall Spa, with a net 67; Steve Goddard was second with 68; and Mick Wilson and Neil Farish were equal third with 70. This left one place still up for grabs as there were three players tied for 5th place on 71, these were Matt Catton, Sam Pollard, who were both previous winners at Woodhall Spa, and Neil Eaves. Initially there was a 3-hole playoff, which still wasn’t enough to decide the winner with both Matt and Neil finishing on the same net score. They both went on to a sudden death playoff, the first extra hole was again tied, but the second was won by Neil, who kept his composure to win the hole with a net par. This completed the 6 who will pay at the home of English Golf on October 21st. Congratulations to those six and good luck at the final
