Scary Scramble: A Howling Success

Friday 26th October saw Melton Mowbray Golf Club host their annual Ladies’s Scary Scramble Open.  More than 90 players had booked in to play from many local clubs, but also included teams from as far away as Bedfordshire and Warwickshire.

Halfway House Helper!

The day stayed mostly fine although chilly and the one short downpour did not dampen the competitive spirit.  Pumpkins on every tee showed visitors their route through the course and starters and volunteers in the clubhouse and at the halfway house made everyone feel very welcome (despite some quite ghoulish costumes).

The format was a Texas Scramble with a 10% allowance of combined handicaps to be taken off the gross score.  The course was still playing well, with the fairways running straight and the greens beginning to slow down.

Winners from Belton Woods

The winners were ‘No Bones’, from Belton Woods consisting of Jackie Wilson, Carole Stothard, Wendy Stewart and Kylie Blackmore with an excellent nett 61.8.  In second place, also from Belton Woods, were the Belton Coven – Jackie Francis, Jen Hallett, Yvonne Walker and Chris Reynolds with 62.6 and in third place were the Mexican Maidens from Melton – Liz Snow, Barbara Hamston, Jean Moulds and Nancy Denny – with 65.1.

Nearest the Pin on the 14th was Denise Waldron from Melton and the longest drive on the 8th was won by Lyndall McLean of Rodway Hill Golf Club.

Finally, a special mention  must go to ‘The Brides of Dracula’ who not only won the best costume prize, but also played the entire competition in fancy dress.  Count Dracula and his coffin were looked after by kind volunteers in the clubhouse!  A great day was had by all and many thanks must go to everyone who worked hard to make it such a fun event.
