From rain to shine – hats off to the L&RVLGA

Our very own Avis Webb is currently captain of the 2nd team of the Leicestershire and Rutland Veteran Ladies Golf Association and on Thursday 19th April Melton Mowbray Golf Club hosted the first match of the season, Captain versus Vice Captain. 32 ladies from 17 clubs around Leicestershire played a 4BBB match.

Action on the course

We managed to have the hottest April day in 70 years and, considering the wet of the week before, the course presented beautifully.  As a consequence, grateful thanks must go to all the greens staff for their hard work in getting the course back to a playable condition.  All ladies were well looked after and made to feel very welcome, both in the clubhouse and at the halfway house, where Lady Captain Sandie Normanton served the players with cold drinks and biscuits – a very welcome relief after a hot nine holes.

A welcome break at the halfway house

The Captain versus Vice Captain match is always held at the Captain’s club and, true to form, the Vice Captain Annette O’Meara from Charnwood Forest won 6-2.  This is the 5th consecutive year the Vice Captain’s team has won.  Although a few of the matches were very close and were only decided on the 18th, the overall damage was that the Vice Captain’s team won 5, lost 1 and halved 2.  However, one of the highlights of the afternoon was Sue Roberts from Longcliffe eagling the 3rd.

Despite the loss, it was great to be back out in the sunshine, playing 18 holes and enjoying the golf.
